benefit from explicit instruction in how to undertake the writing process. The process approach to writing instruction refers to a writing and revision cycle in which students "draft, edit, revise
and redraft their work" (Patthey-Chavez, Matsumura and Valdes, 2004, p. 462). Incorporated within this pedagogical approach is feedback from teachers or peers that includes the chance to undertake revision based
on this information. The revision process is considered crucial to facilitating the students development as writers (Patthey-Chavez, Matsumura and Valdes, 2004). However, the study conducted by Patthey-Chavez,
Matsumura and Valdes (2004), which analyzed the validity of this strategy for aiding student in learning to write, they found that student work demonstrated only the most miniscule improvement over
the course of several drafts. In several cases in their study, teachers included content-related feedback only on the last and final draft of a report, as the focus of instruction
on helping students to gain a command of written language conventions (Patthey-Chavez, Matsumura and Valdes, 2004). This finding suggests, in regards to teaching the writing process, that teachers should include
more explicit instruction designed to help students add content to their reports, as well as address writing mechanics. In this regard, Graham, Harris and MacArthur (2006) propose these steps
in teaching students how to write. The six steps outlined by these educators in regards to the writing process are: 1. Choose a topic. 2. Brainstorm all you know and
would like to know about the topic. 3. Organize your ideas by main points and details on a web, where main ideas and subordinate ideas a linked together through the
use of lines and arrows. 4. Read to find new information and verify the accuracy of already generated material (add, delete, and modify information on the web as necessary).
