Sub-Saharan Africa for example, women are held back and are actually more susceptible to AIDS. In fact, because women are more likely to prostitute themselves, receive an inferior education, they
get AIDS. There are many more social problems, but one may think of this-prostitution, AIDS, lack of education-as a significant cluster of problems for females who live in Sub-Saharan Africa
today. In this region it is the case that young girls and women do exchange sex for ordinary goods and services (Kang, 2005). This may seem unconscionable in a
moral world, but in the world for females in sub-Saharan Africa, it is par for the course. This type of transactional sex sometimes also leads to coercion and slavery, and
violence is often involved (Kang, 2005). As if prostitution was not enough, the girls are further exploited by the men they service. There is a gender bias in the region
and some say that this results in a lack of education and poverty (Kang, 2005). One might also surmise that it is the lack of education that leads to poverty.
Also, there are few work opportunities for women (Kang, 2005). As a result of being involved in prostitution or the sex industry, these women contract AIDS. Kang (2005) writes: "Few
other issues have gone so far as the HIV/AIDS pandemic has in illustrating the impact of gender disparities. African societies are among those requiring conscientious self-assessment and reform when it
