Life as President of the United States is one of the most scrutinizing careers there could be. ETHICS AND MORALS It can be argued that political leadership
is akin to parenting a nation. Not only does the constituency look up to and respect high-ranking political leaders, but it also takes example from their actions. This
is not unlike the same relationship between children and parents, where the actions set forth by the parents are interpreted as socially acceptable and worthy of emulation. However, if
a parent provides mixed signals with respect to acceptable moral behavior, what is the child to think? Does this immorality mean he or she is not good at parenting?
And who is to determine just what is immoral and what is not? These are questions that cannot go unanswered when assessing the importance of private morality and
political leadership. Perhaps the most critical of all issues associated with the breach of any moral code is that of trust. When, for example, the presidential office is occupied
by one who asserts his vow of ethics and morality, it is expected that this pledge will be continually upheld throughout the entire term. If the country comes to
learn that its married president has entered into consensual relations with a woman other than his wife, do they have reason to question his overall fidelity to the nation?
