While the woman arrives at the hospital about eleven oclock at night, she ends up with the diagnosis of a broken toe about 5 oclock the next morning. She returns
home after having her toe nail pierced and drained and foot bandaged. She wears a special, disposable open toed shoe that is smaller than her normal size because the hospital
only has two sizes: very small, and large. Because they do not carry her size, she goes home without the correct fitting and must first make an appointment with an
orthopedic doctor. Such an example is typical. The broken toe required triage, a nurses cursory examination, a physicians exanimation, X-Rays, bandaging, and the dispensing of pain medication, but the process
took about six hours. The problem here is that the woman was unconformable and in pain for much of the time. The trip was worthwhile because in the end, she
did receive her diagnosis of a broken toe, the matter was handled appropriately through the system, and some of the pain was reduced, but she had been up all night
as a result. Many people complain that emergency rooms are fraught with problems. A recent study revels that 90% of the nations emergency rooms are overcrowded ("Research and Markets:
