for first-time authors to not only understand the obstacles to getting published, but they must also understand the importance of acquiring specific publishing knowledge for if/when they do become published.
Not understanding the business aspects of the publishing industry can be just as detrimental as producing writing that isnt very substantial.
It is the dream of all writers to be published. While writers pride themselves on being able to artistically manipulate the written word, the ultimate goal of writing
is communication, and communication occurs when a work is published and read by others. And yet, so many first-time authors meet with a great many obstacles in regards to
having their work published, and this in turn often leads to disappointment and despair for the writer. There are clearly two distinct talents that the writer needs in order
to wade through the publishing process: obvious writing talent as well as a thorough understanding of the business of publishing.
One notable hurdle for first-time authors has nothing to do with what they know, but who they know (Smith, 2002). The same applies in reverse as well (Smith, 2002).
Writers who have a notable name will have a far easier time getting published than someone no one knows (Smith, 2002). Similarly, a writer with a publishing house
