Japan was to purchase an automobile that we undoubtedly built to last. Expectedly, most Japanese car companies sold their products in high volume-- with immense profits. Even during
the recession of the early 1980s, Japanese car-makers managed to keep their necks above water when nobody else could (Fredericks, 1994). Today, the image and activities
of Japanese auto-manufacturers has made a complete 360 degree turnaround. They are frequently hurt by recessions and are often repute for making products of less-than-desirable quality. In their own
country, the Japanese yen has appreciated tremendously over the years- rendering financial stability in a competitive market environment quite difficult. Worse yet, Japanese car manufacturers such as Toyota are
finally beginning to do things that they once seemed immune to. For example, Toyota has "finally" begun to produce vehicles that show an evident lack of knowledge for what
the American consumer wants. Their focus has remained upon the manufacturing of passenger cars even as jeeps and pick-up trucks have grown so especially popular in this country.
Not just here-- but all over the world-- Toyota is suffering from a failed ability to "keep up" with the needs of various markets. Even in Japan itself, Toyota is
still making cars that are too large in size for a market that desires a "compact" feel. If Toyota is to regain the reputation that it once had-- or--
