today than they have at any other point in their history. While it is true that one of the most turbulent and violent points in their history occurred after
the arrival of Europeans to their lands, today these nations are walking a finely delineated line between self government and being wards of the U.S. government. At the same
time they are fighting disease, poverty, dissolution of the nuclear family unit, outside demands on their lands and waters, and many other societal problems. On a more promising note,
however, these nations are vigorously taking charge of their own destinies. While there are significant challenges ahead, there is definite potential for success.
Native American tribes have faced many challenges in their past that have resulted in them being where they are today in regard to the many societal problems that threaten
to overwhelm them. Many of these problems can, in fact, be related to the difficulties these tribes have had with living up to mainstream Americas European expectations and, indeed,
demands. The non-Native culture(s) epitomized in the fledgling U.S., in fact, were almost one-hundred percent different from Native American culture. This difference resulted in friction between the peoples
of this new nation (and in particular its government) and the Native Americans. It also resulted in tremendous losses of land and culture and in Native American exposure to
different foods, alcohol, and disease which were in fact detrimental to Native American health. Once relegated to their respective reservations Native
Americans were first treated as wards of the state. Their every action was governed and they were forced to depend solely on the U.S. government for their every need.
