of the English colonization of Jamestown were characterized by a multitude of problems and weaknesses. Most of these problems related to problems which were occurring back in England.
Although England had other problems going on from a national standpoint, however, she still engaged in extensive exploration and colonization. Jamestown was one of those efforts. One would
think that Jamestown would be a tremendous success given the extensive accomplishments of England. Indeed, the colony was established during one of the most progressive times in England in
terms of national and economic achievements, developments in the arts and academia, and in English exploration and colonization. The colonies themselves, however, had to contend with numerous problems.
Jamestown was established in 1607 by the London Company, a company officially charted by King James I to found colonies in the
Americas. Jamestown was to encounter a number of problems, however. Some threatened its survival itself. The people involved in
the colonization efforts on a first-hand basis, however, had many problems confronting them. The London Company, for example, had been granted extensive privileges including extensive land holdings in the
new world and the right to colonize the Americas. In return, the company invested considerable resources in his explorations of the new continent and in trying to establish colonies
there. Making that investment pay, however, was difficult given the problems the colonist immediately encountered in just insuring their own survival. The
establishment of Jamestown had been preceded by other efforts to take hold of the New World. Settlers had first landed in what is now the state of North Carolina.
