than any other medical condition" (Hensrud and Klein, 2006, p. S5). In other words, the problem of obesity harming the health and welfare of people today as surely as the
lack of food did in previous eras. The term "obese" does not apply to the teenage girl who wants to fit into a size 2. Scientifically, this is a
diagnosis that typically involves measuring the individuals body mass index (BMI), that is, the ratio of fat versus lean muscle mass. Having a BMI outside the normal range for a
persons height, gender and age is associated with an increased in "type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension...(and) obstructive sleep apnea," as well as an increase in heart disease. The Behavioral Risk
