would have described a family as a unit that included two parents and children. This is the nuclear family but today, we find more blended families and other structures that
make up a family. Bowen theory describes a family "as an emotional unit" (Bowen Center for the Study of the Family, 2004). This theory goes on to say that the
nature of the family is its members being "connected emotionally" (Bowen Center for the Study of the Family, 2004) to each other. It is the "connectedness and reactivity" (Bowen Center
for the Study of the Family, 2004) that make the "members interdependent" (Bowen Center for the Study of the Family, 2004). As in all integrated and interdependent systems, a change
in one member will result in changes in other members (Bowen Center for the Study of the Family, 2004; Chalquist, 2004). The second member of the family is reacting to
the behavior of the first member. The reaction may be positive or negative but interdependent persons will always react, just as any other system. In most families, there is one
member who will adjust and accommodate more so than the other members (Bowen Center for the Study of the Family, 2004). They do not like unpleasantness and will do anything
they can to avoid conflict in the family unit. An ecological approach to studying families includes the interaction of the members with the environment (Connard, 2006). This approach considers
the interaction within the family environment as well as the interactions with a larger environment, such as a community (Connard, 2006). The family ecology is comprised of different environments, including:
