lives. Whether they relate to personal injustices, illness or disease, business losses, investment decisions or miscommunication between people or even nations; we all experience problems. Academia, of course,
is full of problems for us to solve as well. Our ability to solve problems in this setting in particular relates to our cognitive function. It involves
a. working memory capacity, b. encoding, and c. retrieval from long term memory. Each of the components of problem solving delineated
above occur in relation to our brains hippocampus activity. This part of our brain impacts an individuals ability to form and utilize memories and to experience cognitive development.
Although the hippocampus is involved in both, it is important to distinguish between problems solving and simple thinking. When an individual thinks they
are passively exploring their word. Problem solving, in contrast, is more of an active behavior. While thinking can utilize a scientific approach it most often leads to such
esoteric knowledge as how mankind was created. When the individual moves on to problem solving he or she accomplishes a particular goal with their activity and typically that activity
is more exact and involved than is pure thinking. With both activities, however, learning can occur. When we solve problems
we are limited, at least in part, by our working memory capacity. Our working memory is where we temporarily store information (Unsworth and Spillers, 2010). We are limited,
however, in the amount of information we can store (Unsworth and Spillers, 2010). When we are overloaded with facts and figures it is easy to see how some of
