the genes of any living thing can be copied to create an identical living organism. Throughout the second half of the twentieth century, scientists worldwide began making amazing progress
in this field, to the point where the possibility of cloning a human being moved closer to reality. For the United States, this placed serious problems from ethical and
legislative perspectives. The majority of Americans espouse the Christian faith, which prohibits the taking of human life for any reason on moral grounds. As far as the law
is concerned, after the 1972 Supreme Court decision on Roe v. Wade legalized abortion in the United States, elective abortion has become associated with scientific stem cell research (Wertz, 2002).
For this reason, the federal government has consistently prohibited any federal funding of research on fetuses, embryos, and their materials. However, the private sector, which receives private funds
to conduct such research has been spared from the limitations imposed by federal government regulatory action. Beginning in October 1987, the National Institutes of Health received a funding
request to conduct research on Parkinsons disease by transplanting fetal stem cells into the brains of patients (Wertz, 2002). Though supported by the Democratic Party, such federal funding was
revoked beginning in 1995, when the Republican Party controlled both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The cloning issue further aggravated a slippery slope that has historically
existed between church and state in America. Religious conservatives are particularly outraged by what they regard as any process such as abortion and stem cell research that involves the
