out for the slaves for they were nothing more than children, the South had an abundant amount of excuses or arguments for keeping slaves.
Although slavery has a long history, and still goes on today, it is not necessarily something that could be righteously justified in any civilization that is searching for
higher meaning and greater equality of all human beings. Although it clearly served as a priceless institution in the United States, this does not mean it was an enlightened institution
or that it had any real sense of justification. With that in mind the following paper examines these arguments and beliefs. Pro-Slavery Arguments
Slavery, it should be noted, is something that has a long history. It seems that perhaps every culture, every civilization has possessed slaves. It is noted that, "The
institution of slavery, however, is as old as civilization. It has existed in various forms throughout history and, remarkably, continues to exist today, in the 21st century" (Castillo, 2006). The
powerful and great civilizations of the past, the Greeks and the Egyptians and the Romans, all possessed slaves (Castillo, 2006). The reasons for slavery, through time, are generalized in the
following: * Capture in times of war, kidnapping or slave raiding. * Punishment for criminal conduct. * Payment for debt. * Sale by their own parent, guardian or chieftain. *
Birth to a slave mother. * Transfer of owner from one master to another through sale or inheritance (Castillo, 2006). In addition,
