as they are presently being administered are in a shambles and our products, the students themselves, often pass through these institutions as though they were attending some type of mass
transit facility rather than enrolled in a facility for learning. Our schools are supposed to prepare our children to take on adulthood, to prepare them for college and the
jobs and careers that come afterward. Our schools are supposed to turn our children into productive adults who can not only function but excel in society. Our schools
are not meeting these goals. As Baltimore School Superintendent Walter Amprey has observed:
""The clock has run out and our bag of tricks is empty. Many of the things weve tried in the past have not worked," and privatization in a small
number of city schools "is only one of many things we are involved in." to try and rectify the situation (Thompson, 1994).
Question There actually two real questions behind the issue of the privatization with
which we should concern ourselves with. These are: Would the implementation of privatization in our public school systems result in an improvement in the academic achievement of our
children? Would privatization of our schools more adequately prepare our children for their future roles as productive members of our society? Obviously the answers to these questions differ
according to who is providing it. In order to figure out the true answer we must first make a diligent effort to cut through all the hype and personal
