long waiting lists and poor service. Unlike many other countries private medical insurance is a service that has been marginalised. This is due to the formation of the National Health
Service (NHS). It may be argued that there are several factors driving this growth, the current economic climate where there is increased disposable income for many families, combined with the
perception of poor healthcare may be seen as a push factor. The increasing number of individuals reacting this way may be seen as a pull factors for suppliers. The
way in which the medical services can grow have also seen change with a wider acceptance of commercial interests. The new management structures and rising attention paid to financial aspects
of the NHS have facilitated a change in attitude. In the future this is likely to be seen as a growth industry, one that, with the right government policies, may
help alleviate the pressures in the NHS and increase healthcare standards for all. The market is old, but has not reached maturity die to the slow level of growth.
Currently, in a growth stage, there are likely to be new entrants with private health services being offered by new companies. These may be companies such as the British United
Provident Association, better known as BUPA, where there is the direct provision of healthcare services, both as part of mananged care and insurance as well as on demand services (BUPA,
2002). Others may be more along the lines of HSA, this is where there are choices, that either pay a set amount for illness or conditions, which include pregnancy and
