Taken together, they describe a metaphysical journey through Hell, up to Purgatory, and into Paradise; the poet Virgil is Dantes guide through the Inferno. This paper discusses the Inferno and asks where Kurt Cobain, Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein would end up, and what their punishments would be, if they were condemned to Dantes Hell. Discussion The first thing to do, and probably the most difficult, is to figure out the crimes each of these men committed. Cobain is of course a suicide, but the other two have committed so many crimes on such a vast scale that its difficult to narrow it down to just the single most important one. However, lets consider their history. Hitler annexed Austria, built up his war machine, invaded Poland, France and the Low Countries and plunged the world into a second global conflict. But perhaps his most heinous crime was his callous decision to use technology in the service of murder. He and his henchmen drew up the plans and set the machinery in motion to try and exterminate an entire race of people. By the time he was finally stopped, his death camps had claimed the lives of six million Jews, plus millions of other "undesirables" including gypsies, homosexuals and others who were considered unfit. His crime then is genocide. Saddam Hussein is currently on trial in Iraq, but its a violent and unsettling spectacle, as two of his defense team have been killed in the past weeks. Motives for the slayings are unclear, but they may either be designed to weaken his defense and assure a death sentence; or they could be attempts by Hussein supporters to derail the proceedings (Morris, 2005).
