of decades ago which is good but violence still needs to be reduced. A number of theories have been put forth to explain prison violence. Deprivation theory was popular
in the 1950s and 1960s, which suggests that inmates feel stigmatized by the outside world and that prison conditions were oppressive so they acted out in violence. Deprivation has to
do with small quarters for living and the lack of privileges people outside have in the society (Lahm, 2008). Importation theory was another model used to explain violence. This model
discussed the ability of the prisoner to adapt to prison life based on his experiences and socialization prior to going to prison. For example, prisoners with a history of living
in lower class neighborhoods with a lot of violence tended to bring those values and behaviors into the prison. In other words, it the prison was violent in his life,
he will continue to be violent in prison (Lahm, 2008). They do not easily accept the prison code that is in place at that specific prison. Some studies have found
that visitation has an effect on prison violence. Inmates who have lots of visitors tend to become less involved in violent episodes (Lahm, 2008). Inmates who receive few visits from
family and friends tend to be more involved in violence. The structure of the prison has been found to have an effect on the amount of prisoner violence. Some prisons
are designed for felonious aggressive acts while others are geared more to house those who commit misdemeanors (Lahm, 2008). There is more violence in felony prisons than in the prisons
