various aspects of prison violence. The paper discusses and examines various aspects of prison violence, from violence between inmates, violence related to overcrowding and violence that comes from guards. The
paper ends with a discussion of what can be done to improve the violent conditions of prison. Prison Violence "Thousands of violent assaults take place each year behind
U.S. prison walls. Most go unrecorded" (Clarke, 2003; 40). The reasons for violence are many and perhaps not the least of which is the fact that many people expect there
to be violence in prisons and so they ignore it. "A recent study of prisons in four Midwestern states found that approximately one in five male inmates report a pressured
or forced sexual incident while incarcerated; about one in 10 report that they had been raped" (Clarke, 2003; 40). Prison guards, politicians, and every day individuals know that such
violence goes on and it seems as though we expect it because we see it as part of their punishment. Prison should not be a nice place and so violence
in the prisons is blindly accepted. Clark (2003) states that "Prison administrators and guards have witnessed the violence--or at least its results--for decades, the public and politicians are aware of
it, criminologists warn about it, and the prison shower rape has even been mainstreamed as a school-yard joke, yet the problem of prison violence persists" (Clarke, 2003; 40). Before
