Some suggest a reduction in tough drug legislation that has created this situation in the first place. Mandatory minimums of course are just a part of the problem. There are
in fact a number of issues that need to be addressed in order to resolve the problem of overcrowding. An alternative to prisons is one idea that many people discuss.
Probation for example would reduce overcrowding. Yet, in a society of laws, there will be prisons. The idea of the penal system is not to simply baby-sit a population, or
to punish the criminals, but to provide a way for the prisoners to pay back society. As they serve their sentences, they are supposed to contemplate what they had done
wrong and become better human beings. While overcrowding is an issue discussed, it is also the case that many people overlook the real issues. That is, the fact that prisoners
do not have luxurious accommodations is not the problem. In other words, advocates are not fighting for pristine conditions, but they are fighting for humane conditions. The problem is that
overcrowding leads to gang formation, prison breaks and uprisings, violence, and a reduction in the services that prisons attempt to provide. After all, the prison is not supposed to be
a box for the miscreants to fester, but a real place for them to learn to become better people. How can they do this in overcrowded conditions? The Bureau
of Justice recently reported statistics to demonstrate that the prison population is continuing to increase and now, there are close to 2.5 million people in the system ("Prison Nation," 2009).
