it has slowly begun to be a very serious problem as prison overcrowding urges some sort of change. The following paper examines overcrowding and alternatives or solutions that the government
could take. Prison Overcrowding It is perhaps important to understand why there is so much prison overcrowding in the nation in order to best assess a solution. For
the most part it appears as though a large number of the criminals incarcerated are being put in prison for drug charges. And, these charges include simple possession of a
small amount of marijuana. One of the problems, involving drug offenders and incarceration, has taken place in the past few decades as the War on Drugs became a major concern.
One author notes that the criminal justice system is the power in this reality and that the War on Drugs, in combination with harsher sentences has led to overcrowding: "The
driving force behind prison overcrowding...is the aggressive tough on crime approach taken by policymakers, criminal justice administrators, and the court since the mid-1990s" (Factors Impacting Prison Overcrowding, 2007). Because of
this approach more criminals are serving a larger portion of their sentence than they had in the past, leaving little room for new criminals (Factors Impacting Prison Overcrowding, 2007).
There appear to be many attempts to alleviate the problems of overcrowding, each implemented by individual states and communities, but these approaches do not appear to be working. For
example, in Connecticut it seems that more beds were put in, more buildings constructed, and more room was made for criminals but within a decade or more they were severely
overcrowded once more, despite a drop in crime (Factors Impacting Prison Overcrowding, 2007). Such information suggests that making more room is not the answer. In addition, it appears that because
