in prison and they cannot help to support their families during this period("Prison industries produce good results," 2007). In many ways, imprisonment seems like a waste of a life. While
people should be imprisoned for certain crimes, there is a sense of stagnation and futility. If someone does lose privileges, that does not mean they should do nothing all day.
Before examining some positive programs, it helps to look at the problems with the system. First, the purpose of prison is to alter something. The prisoners have done something
wrong and so they need to be punished. Ideally, they are to be rehabilitated, so when they return to society, they can be productive. However, prisons are ineffective in creating
model citizens. At the same time, prisons are not models for rehabilitation, but according to some theories of criminal justice, they need not be. Rehabilitation is only one reason for
punishment. Other reasons go to retribution, deterrence and social control. Prisons do provide retribution for the victims of crime and the worse the system is the easier it is to
accomplish that goal. In some way, prison is a deterrent in and of itself, but that is debatable. If prisons were a good deterrent, prisons would be less crowded, not
more. In fact, in respect to the prison population, it had doubled between 1980 and 1990 (Carey-Webb, 1995). As a method of social control, prison is acceptable, but many complain
that great deals of non-violent offenders are locked up. Certainly, there are other avenues that may be explored to create a place for criminals to be treated so that they
