a composition on another surface" (MOMA). The transfer occurs when a sheet of paper is placed in contact with that surface via a printing pres (MOMA). The artist decides how
many impressions to make and this is referred to as an "edition" (MOMA). While there are various ways to make a print, the four techniques that are best-known are
"woodcut, etching, lithography and screenprint" (MOMA). As the student researching this topic only mentions woodblock and metal engraving in the assignment, only these two techniques will be described and analyzed.
Each of the techniques used in printmaking is associated with its own distinctive visual effects. Each of these processes depends on the "matrix," i.e., the "surface, plate or block that
holds and guides the ink to create the image," which is created either by pressing a sheet of paper to it by hand or transferring the image via a printing
press ("About"). "Intaglio," which is the Italian word for "incised," refers to prints that are produced from creating "incisions or depressions," which are made "below the surface of the matrix,"
with excessive ink wiped off, leaving sufficient ink in the grooves to transfer the image ("About"). In "relief" printmaking, it is the uppermost surface of the matrix that produces the
image, as a relief involves carving away parts of the matrix ("About") A wood cut is an example of a relief print and an etching is an example of an
intaglio print ("About"). The earliest prints were made with woodcuts, which is a technique that appeared in China in the ninth century and was developed in Europe around the year
1400 (MOMA). Using this technique, the artist first sketches a drawing onto a block of wood and then uses gouging tools to cut away pieces of the wood, keeping in
