A 5 page paper discussing general principles of government, particularly as defined by Plato’s Republic. We have come to a place in which it appears that the people have relatively little voice in the operation of the federal government, but that cynical view results more from lack of citizen involvement than from any fault of the government as a system. The terrorist attacks of September 11 resulted in a national demonstration that citizens do care, while also demonstrating the worth of maintaining the central government that can act right away for all the people of the country. had commentary about the nature and role of government, and none more than Plato. In his Republic, Plato presented the ideas that centuries later would be embodied in a
short battleground speech. The discourse that required volumes to set forth Abraham Lincoln was able to summarize in only a few short sentences. The most notable of these
sentences in his Gettysburg Address states that government exists "of the people, by the people and for the people." Definitions
"Government" is that entity formed as an administrative and defense device of a group of people reaching agreement to be bound together on the basis
of some common point of interest. In Israel, the primary point of commonality among the people is the Hebrew heritage that provides the basis for many national and local
laws. Others (i.e., non-Jews) are welcome into Israel, but only if they agree to abide by the laws based on Jewish heritage.
Position within prescribed boundaries is the most common point of reference defining the population giving its permission to be governed by a specific government entity. The residents of the
original thirteen colonies on which the new United States of America was founded removed their approval of being governed by the British crown and opted instead to be governed by
a separate and very different political form. The collective decision to change form or withdraw from the population governed by a single overriding
