or destiny, and another is to be virtuous towards other people. A third principle, also noted by a student, is to only live in the present, and not dwell on
the future or past. The student goes on to ask, for each principle, whether or not it is really necessary for a happy life. The first principle is that one
should accept ones fate or destiny. For Aurelius, fate is something that is assigned by nature (20). It is his belief that fate is real and that people are fated
a certain destiny. The idea that one is fated to be something or live a certain way is debatable. People do go around and analyze their lives, wondering if they
would have taken a step in another direction if they would end up in a different place. Yet, some contend that fate is inevitable. One cannot run from their destiny.
Many ancient texts support this idea, demonstrating that even if one runs from predictions, they will somehow fulfill their destiny. Yet, is accepting ones fate or destiny truly something that
will give one peace? Will it provide one with the good life? First, it is true that many people do not know their fate, so sometimes it is hard to
resign to a certain outcome. At the same time, there is the serenity prayer used in modern times that contends one should accept the things they cannot change. It is
true that acceptance can go a long way to living the good life. If people can accept their circumstances-or their fate as Aurelius might call it-they can experience some contentment.
