wars and economic disasters might have been avoided if the people involved were adhering to correct principles. Principle-centered leadership is based on the belief that natural laws must be followed. These principles are foundational and they will lead to behaviors that enable transformations. While values may be subjective, principles are objective. Values always reflect our cultural background and other factors but correct principles obey natural laws in any setting or under any conditions (Covey, 1991). Even though the territory, i.e., situations, change, correct principles do not change. There are four dimensions of principles: security, guidance, power and wisdom. Security is about our own self-identity, self-esteem, personal strength, emotional stability. Guidance has to do with the direction that we personally receive. It includes standards or principles that influence what we do. Our own conscience acts as the monitor. At its highest level, it becomes our spiritual conscience. Wisdom leads to balance and gives us an understanding of life and how parts fit together. When really developed, wisdom provides a vision of the ideal. Power has to do with strength and courage and the will to act. It is the energy we need to make decisions. People who have highly developed power have vision and discipline and they are proactive as well as responsible (Covey, 1991). These four dimensions or factors are interdependent. They work in concert with each other. Characteristics of Principle-Centered Leaders Stephen Covey identified eight characteristics of the principle-centered leader. They are: continually learning; service-oriented; radiate positive energy; believe in other people; lead balanced lives; see life as an adventure; synergistic; and they exercise for self-renewal (Covey, 1991). Principle-centered leaders live by these rules. They are always learning and developing new skills by reading, attending seminars, observing, etc. They strive for win-win solutions ...
