The following examination of this case study first looks at the rational, heuristic and Seven Step decision-making processes in order to a framework for the principal to use in making a decision relative to the issues described in the case study. Rational decision-making process: In this model of decision-making, the individual employs a logical and orderly cognitive path that first identifies the problem and then goes step-by-step towards a logical solution (Holistic Management, 2000). There are various methods that fit this paradigm, one of which, the "rational, seven-step decision-making method, will be examined more closely. Another rational decision-making method is the "bounded rational process," which assumes that there is a "single, best solution that will maximize the desired outcomes" (Holistic Management, 2000). This model suggests that decision-makers interpret information, extract crucial elements and, then, within these boundaries, "behave rationally" (Holistic Management, 2000). The steps are basically identical with the seven-step framework, but it is assumed that the solution will not be perfect, as it is difficult, if not impossible, to be perfectly "objective, rational and (have) measurable criteria for choice or evaluation and feedback" (Holistic Management, 2000). Seven-Step decision-making process: This rational model for decision-making encompasses specific steps that aid the decision-making in the process of logical analysis of a problem. The steps are: 1. Define the problem...; 2. Generate all possible solutions...; 3. Generate objective assessment criteria...; 4. Choose the best solution from those generated in step 2...b based on the criteria generate in step 3...; 5. Implement the chosen alternative; 6. Evaluate the success of the chosen alternative; 7.
