Born in Paris on June 7, 1848, Paul Gauguins artist talent established him as one of the worlds foremost Postimpressionist French painters (Anonymous, 2002). Four artists
in particular proved extremely influential in Gauguins career: Edgar Degas, Charles Laval, Emile Bernard and Vincent van Gogh. These individuals were instrumental in influencing changes to Gauguins artistic interpretation,
with Laval acting as a significant inspiration to his primitive attraction. "Gauguins art has all the appearance of a flight from civilisation, of a search for new
ways of life, more primitive, more real and more sincere. His break away from a solid middle-class world, abandoning family, children and job, his refusal to accept easy glory
and easy gain are the best-known aspects of Gauguins fascinating life and personality" (Anonymous, 2002). What one might learn about the journey
to becoming a primitive artist is that one must follow ones intrinsic path and be true to ones own inspiration. A somewhat private man himself, Gauguin understood how it
felt to be outside the circle. His art was the only aspect of his existence that truly gave him any release; without it, he was little more than a
