satirists in the history of English literature. Swift was a perceptive student of human nature, who presented the shortcomings of man in Gullivers Travels not only to achieve a
humorous effect. He also sought to provide some much-needed insight into the root cause of the continuing conflicts between people and nations from an ethical perspective, which he determined
to be a preponderance of pride. According to Swift, pride was much more of a curse than a blessing. Lemuel Gulliver is a young Englishman who possesses an
adventurous spirit and an endless curiosity about the world. As a result, he takes four journeys, which are not only physical but metaphorical. In Part I, Gulliver finds
himself in Lilliput, where the normal-sized traveler is considered to be a freak by the six-inch Lilliputians. Gullivers pride in his presumed superiority because of his size is obvious
in his pompous observation, "I could not sufficiently wonder at the intrepidity of these diminutive mortals, who durst venture to mount and walk on my body, while one of my
hands was at liberty, without trembling at the very sight of so prodigious a creature as I must appear to them" (Swift 1931). The Lilliputians are also petty and
small-minded, easily susceptible to corruption and think nothing of going to war over such inane matters as the improper breaking of an egg. Yet, no matter how small they
are, they still have considerable pride over their menial accomplishments, which is Swifts way of showing it to be of little consequence.
Furthermore, the difference in size between the tiny Lilliputians and Gulliver also symbolizes the protagonists pride in himself. All of Gullivers actions and reactions are motivated by pride.
