around the pole. The planet is definitely warming up. While there has been considerably debate about whether or not global exists and what causes it, there is overwhelming scientific consensus
today that, first of all, it does exist and, secondly, that the "largely controlled and still increasing release of anthropogenic (human-caused) greenhouse gases" contribute significantly to environmental crisis (Jordan 23).
Kerry Emanuel, MIT scientist and expert on the climate, says that research shows that violent storms have increased in intensity and duration by roughly 50 percent since 1970 (Jordan
23). The surface temperature of water in the tropics has been running 1.8 to 3.6 degrees above normal according to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (Jordan 23). Water temperature is,
of course, the engine that fuels hurricanes and tropical storms. These facts indicate that people living in industrialized countries are going to have to change their way of life
in order to control greenhouse gas emissions. One of the prime sources of these gases is cars and trucks. The American people have been having a love affair with the
automobile since its invention. However, not only is gasoline a non-renewable resource, but it now appears that it has a potentially deadly effect on the worlds climate. Change is overdue
and it will be expensive. American industry should cut down on greenhouse gasses. This will make the cost of purchased goods rise. Gas should become more expensive, as this
discourages people from driving. The car industry should invest in research to perfect the electric car and lower its cost. Advances have been made in this direction as hybrid
