pain. Often, it is the proverbial innocent bystander who pays the price. In addition, the stresses of modern life are also responsible for causing people within the workplace to "snap."
Stack (2003) comments: "We have road rage, we have air rage ... and now, in corporate America, we have desk rage. Weve always had workplace stress. Its a little bit
more heightened today" (pp. 9). All of these factors, along with the possibility of random and unprovoked violence requires that individual workers, their managers and supervisors, and entire organizations take
the necessary precautions to minimize the possibility of a violent event occurring at work. Dangerous Work There are certain basic facts that should be understood: Blythe and Gardner (1999) point
out that: "In 1996, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) proclaimed homicide the leading cause of death for women in the workplace, and the second-leading cause for
men" (pp. 43). They also note in their article that in the decade between 1982 and 1992, the number of employees or ex-employees who killed their boss doubled (pp. 43)
Information from the National Safe Workplace Institute states that: "... violence costs businesses $36 billion annually--with a single episode averaging $250,000 in lost work time and legal expenses" (Internet source).
According to OSHA (the federal governments Occupational Safety and Health Administration): "Some 2 million American workers are victims of workplace violence each year" (Internet source). OSHA officials also note
