They are extremely painful and leave the patient in agony. All three of these conditions can be prevented and if not prevented, they can be treated. Urinary Tract Infections A urinary tract infection happens when bacteria enter the urinary system. It can be an infection of the ureters, urethra, bladder or kidneys. The urine will contain bacteria if there is an infection (Virginia Department of Health, 2011). Urinary tract infections are commonly referred to as UTIs. More women have UTIs than men because of the structure of the urinary tract system. The urethra in women is only about 1.5 inches long while it is 8 inches long in men. Bacteria travel that short distance more easily than in the longer distance in men. Another factor with women is the cessation of estrogen production which makes the walls of the urinary tract thinner and less able to fight infections (Simon, 2009). There are about 13,000 deaths resulting from UTIs each year in this country. Many are found in long term care facilities (Virginia Department of Health, 2011). Some people are at higher risk for UTIs than others. Risks include older age, poor hygiene, and/or poor hydration. Two of the greatest risks can be prevented: poor hygiene and poor hydration. It is important for health care providers to make sure the elderly drink enough water and other fluids. This is one of the best prevention techniques.
