to a number of different threats. Those individuals that pride themselves on their ability to acquire unauthorized access to network present the greatest of those threats. Although the
term "cracking" is more correctly reserved for the illegal activity which gains unauthorized access to computer systems, the term "hacking" is most often used today to describe this type of
activity. Todays so-called "hackers" employ a variety of methods to accomplish their crime. The purpose of this paper is to review these methods so that network attacks can
be prevented. Two independent articles will be contrasted and compared in order to identify the most common ways that networks are attacked and so that preventative methods can be
implemented and strengthened. Scope of Work The literature
reveals that there are considerably different views about the means through which networks can be protected from attacks. In a recent article in Information Week so-called "security evangelist" Ian
Angell reveals the truth of network security (Information Week, 2008). That truth is that technology alone is not the solution to preventing attacks. Angell contends, in fact, that
"only neurotics thing they can use technology to control the real world" (Information Week, 2008). While technology is certainly not the entire answer, however, it is indeed part of
it. Understanding both the motives behind network attacks and the modus operandi of the attackers is by far the best means of protecting
