social work as it is in any other occupational endeavor. Burnout is a very real problem in the case of Patricia, a forty year old woman who has worked
for one year with a nonprofit organization developing a neighborhood community arts program. Although Patricia initially immersed herself happily in her work, she has recently become less passionate and
even cynical. Her supervisor recently overheard her commenting on her overwhelming feelings of powerlessness and her growing belief that no matter how long or how hard she works she
will never be able to effect the changes she so desperately wants to see in the neighborhood. Patricia also confided to coworkers that she feels that no one actually
cares about what she is doing and that she is unclear of what is even expected of her. Obviously, Patricias supervisor is concerned
about the comments he has overheard. He is equally concerned that he has observed a decline in Patricias productivity. He is faced with having to approach Patricia and
attempting to resolve the problem before it gets worse. Given the correlation between worker burnout and social support, a correlation that will be more fully explored below, it is
critical that Patricias boss recognize that he is an important part of Patricias social support network. Patricias boss could approach Patricia
formally and give her an ultimatum that her productivity improve but a more logical approach at this stage in the game would be to approach her informally offering praise for
