has made over the years (Prestowitz, 2006). The author is quite critical of the government and its policies but also addresses economic questions quite directly, viewing the value of
the dollar-which is troubling-as something that is cause for concern. The author begins the book with an important observation about the power of the U.S. dollar. In talking about
the United States of America, Prestowitz (2006) writes: "Its language American English, is the language of commerce worldwide, and the U.S. dollar is the worlds money" (p.1). This may sound
good, but as this analysis goes on, it will be shown that this is not the case at all. With the dollar declining in value, this author makes dismal predictions
about the United States of America. Prestowitz (2006) seems to suggest that education over the course of ones life is important and also, that while higher education is
good, it is not always the best or most financially valuable endeavor. The author makes a good point here. It has been pointed out by more than one theorist that
college is so expensive, it pays to work instead. Yet, this essentially puts Americans behind the rest of the world. The point of the book seems to be that America
is losing economically due to some policy decisions it has made in the past. The author claims that the tax system in the United States is something that few
really understand (Prestowitz, 2006). The author remarks: "So, instead of taxing income, America should be taxing consumption" (Prestowitz, 2006, p. 261). From time to time politicians do crop up to
