but is based on a true incident that happened in the not too distant past. Indeed, people tend to forget about bio incidents but they do know about the dangers
of viruses, at least intellectually. They fear the flu and the plague and are now worried about bioterrorism. What occurs in The Hot Zone, and the conflicts contained in the
story, go to the fear of viral contamination. It is not an extraordinary plot, but it is quite exciting in terms of how the story unfolds. The primary theme of
this book is man against nature. One writer sums up the plot of this widely read novel as follows: "Mr Prestons for the plain old palm-sweating fear of reading
about a victim of a filovirus as he "crashes and bleeds out", dying from a virus that no one can cure--and which is really out there, lying low in the
jungle, just a few hours airliner ride away from any of us" ("The Hot," 1994, p.91). It seems to be a cruel injustice that man, while so intricate and vital,
can be taken out by nature. Nature is generally seen as a positive force, but it can be deadly. Nature includes things like tornadoes and earthquakes but also include diseases
that can kill. The Plague for example took out many lives during the Middle Ages. Ebola threatens to be just as deadly, at least in this work. The Ebola outbreaks
in reality had been contained. Based on much factual data, the author does create a larger than life situation, but certainly the conflict is how man can fight this virus.
In the book, the clock is ticking. The team of experts must go to various places such as Africa to resolve the puzzle. For Americans, perhaps the scariest part
