of higher learning that can be categorized as either community colleges, four-year colleges, or universities, each of the 15 million students that are seeking enrollment can be confronted with an
overwhelming number of choices (Adams, 2003). Each of these institutions has a specific reputation and attending there goes hand in hand with a certain degree of prestige or lack
of prestige. Adams (2003) reports that prestige is becoming a highly sought after commodity that it is a major factor in:
"college selection and marketing, and both prospective students and institutions are competing more and more aggressively for a greater share of that most
rare and alluring of all commodities in higher education--reputation" Many students and parents alike, however,
are perplexed by the question "just how important is an institutions reputation?". The purpose of higher learning, of course, is to prepare students to take their place in society
as productive adults. Does attending a prestigious university better equip a student to fulfill that goal? The answer, it seems, is just as variable as are the people
providing it. To some students prestige is everything. This contention can be no better illustrated than with the example of Blair Hornstine,
a New Jersey teen that when asked to share her valedictorian honors with two other students decided to sue her school district (Allhoff, 2003). Hornstine obviously highly values such
