50 years later, Athens produced another legendary leader, Alcibiades. But his reputation, unlike Leonidass, has not remained unblemished. This paper discusses the way in which Steven Pressfield portrays Alcibiades and
his world. Discussion There are five points addressed in this paper, some of which are very personal to the student. 1. Why did the student choose this book and
this particular time in history? The Tides of War tells of the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta, a conflict that raged for 27 years. The student might be interested
in how the conflict shaped the history of the region, which is the birthplace of Western democracy. The student might be intrigued by the political intrigue of the time; or
it could even be that the student is impressed by Zack Snyders film 300 and its portrayal of the Spartan culture. There is something undeniably exciting about battles in ancient
times, which required men to come at least within spear range of their opponents, if not actually engaged them hand-to-hand. The idea of dropping bombs from 30,000 feet or sitting
in a headquarters building and pushing a button to annihilate soldiers thousands of miles away would have appalled them. 2. Historical / cultural themes and patterns: The book centers on
the life and career of Alcibiades, the adopted son of the great Athenian leader Pericles. It is Pericles who gives his name to the "Golden Age" of Athens and he
