This is particularly true when the threat is an ongoing one. An example can be found in the coverage of a series of killings in Florida that occurred in
the 1990s. Several men were apparently killed by someone they had picked up hitchhiking. The threat was very real and the media was vigilant in keeping the public
informed and on guard. The killer, it turns out, was one Aileen Wuornos. With Wuornos apprehension, however, the medias role turned more from valued watchdog to entertainment mogul.
From her arrest to her ultimate execution, Wuronos was treated more as a morbid curiosity by the media than she was accorded factual and unbiased reporting.
Wuronos became the target of societal hatred and contempt the degree of which has seldom been equaled for male criminals not just because of the kind
of violent crimes she committed but because of how she stood out from the norm in most aspects of her life. The media gloried not only in the fact
that Wuornos was a killer but also that she was female killer. Even more shock value lie in the fact that Wuornos was a lesbian. The media presented her
as not just as a curiosity but as pure evil, as a demon. There are hundreds of examples of articles about Wuornos that
clearly express the press distaste for her. The articles immediately after her arrest and the discovery of the details of her personal life were more along the lines of
circus entertainment than they were valuable journalism. Newspaper articles changed from condemning to almost condescending, however, once Wuornos wass convicted. Consider, for example, a January 1991 article in
