the platform and wasted no time in making his preliminary introduction, saying, "The twenty-first century is going to be a time of profound changes. It will be up to
the American people to elect a President who will take the lead in implementing the changes that represent the best collective interests of the citizens who make up this great
nation." Pausing briefly, the host continued, "During the course of this debate, the candidates will be concentrating on domestic policy issues, such as taxation, education and the death penalty.
The candidates will also be proposing the individual agendas they will be advocating as President. Each candidate will also be granted an opportunity for rebuttal, should he desire
to do so." At this point, the candidates slowly make their way to the podium, amidst polite applause. The host announced, "First, I would like to present Henry David
Thoreau, the liberal independent candidate for President who first achieved national attention through his acts of disobedience. He is the champion of the individual and believes in as little
government as possible. Next, there is Socrates, the democratic candidate who is in favor of a strong government comprised of Americas best and brightest citizens." After the candidates
shake hands, the moderator presented the first topic for debate, that of taxation. Thoreau stated his position on the matter: "Ladies and gentlemen, let me state here and now
that I believe taxation serves no purpose except to oppress the impoverished citizens of United States. Does the average person really understand where the American tax dollars are going?
No citizen should be required by federal, state or local law to pay any type of tax. This is nothing more than a form of legalized slavery.
