office and the power it holds. Discussion The President derives his powers from Article II of the U.S. Constitution, which says "The executive Power shall be vested in
a President of the United States of America. He shall hold his Office during the Term of four Years, ... together with the Vice President, chosen for the same
Term" (FindLaw). The Article goes on to describe the mechanism of election, which is the Electors (the term "Electoral College" didnt come into use until the 1800s) (U.S. Electoral
College). Each state appoints a number of Electors "equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State [is] entitled in the Congress" and those Electors
then meet in their "respective States, and [vote] by Ballot for two Persons" (Findlaw). The Electors then make a list of all the people for whom votes were cast
and the number of votes for each person; sign and seal the list and send it to the President of the Senate (FindLaw). He opens the ballots and counts
the votes, and the person with the highest number is sworn in as President of the United States (Findlaw). This system is still in use today; there is no
direct nation-wide vote for President (U.S. Electoral College). Instead, the result of the Presidential election is in reality the result of 51 combined state elections (U.S. Electoral College).
