the American landscape and disappeared forever. The Historic Sites Act of 1935 enlisted the paid help of almost one thousand photographers and architects for an extensive project that documented
historic entities all across the country in order to "preserve for public use historic sites, buildings and objects of national significance for the inspiration and benefit of the people of
the United States" (Anonymous, 2009). The documentation brought forth by Roosevelts New Deal program spawned the safeguarding of structures and articles that would otherwise continue down the path of
deterioration until there was nothing left but a distant memory. In the wake of World War II and the population and development boom that followed, the effects of growth
and new construction on Americas cities, towns, and countryside energized concerned citizens, who began to seek a new and more comprehensive approach to preserving Americas heritage (Advisory Council on Historic
Preservation, 2002). The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) programs were established as a means by which to begin the process of historic
structures documentation; HABS original preservation efforts focused upon notable seventeenth- and eighteenth-century building that were in disrepair, while HAER was concentrated more on industrial entities as bridges, canals and railroads.
The federal role in stewardship of Americas heritage has been such that the Civilian Conservation Corps, Works Progress Administration and Federal Writers Project were established by New Deal influence.
