as one of the most fore-sighted of all American presidents. Reagans contributions to the United States and to the world in general are tremendous from a number of different
perspectives. His ideas played, and continue to play, a critical role in cultural development but they also continue to play a heavy role in such things as national defense.
Reagan excelled as a leader during times of crisis. He also excelled in delineating his visions for the world and setting an agenda to achieve those visions.
One of those visions was the so-called Strategic Defense Initiative, a futuristic plan for insuring US security using high tech weaponry. Many have contended that, although it never came
to full fruition, the very existence of the Strategic Defense Initiative played a major role in the end of the Cold War. The intent of this paper is to
explore that possibility. Numerous documents will be reviewed that clarify both Reagans goals at the time and the impression those goals had on the USSR.
Discussion Reagans strategic defense initiative depended on the use of not just
ground-based systems but also space-based systems for the protection of our national holdings against attacking strategic nuclear ballistic missiles. The strategic defense initiative, however, encompassed much more than weaponry
alone. Despite the fact that it quickly was nicknamed the Star Wars initiative, Reagans plan was a plan that emphasized not just the development of superior weaponry but also
