American students are routinely found to be far behind the achievement levels of their peers in other countries. This paper considers two subjects: What President Obama planned to do
about the problem, and what he has achieved thus far. Discussion One of the Presidents goals for education concentrates not on students but on teachers. The American Association of Colleges
for Teacher Education notes that improving the quality of teachers is the centerpiece of President Obamas program. This is somewhat different, as most past efforts have focused on student performance.
Yet the two would seem to be causally linked: poor teachers make for poor students. AACTE has been advocating for improving teachers for years, so they are extremely supportive of
the President. They have several programs that will help improve teacher performance, such as the performance assessment and a residency for teachers (Harrill-McClellan, 2009). The performance assessment would do just
that: assess the performance effectiveness of both new and veteran teachers, while the residency model would involve "a year long clinical internship with a master teacher in a high need
school" (Harrill-McClellan, 2009). As to what the President is working on, he has devised the "Race to the Top" initiative, a $4.35 billion dollar program, "funded through the Recovery Act,"
that encourages competition among the states "to inspire education reform" (de Nies, 2009). Says Mary Barnes, Director of the Domestic Policy Council, "This competition is not based on politics or
ideology or interest group preferences. Its based on whether or not a state is ready to do what actually works" (de Nies, 2009). The President spoke about his program in
a middle school in Madison, Wisconsin on the anniversary of his election, citing the importance of "innovation and excellence in our public education system" (de Nies, 2009). In
