2005). The following apper examines his presidency. Ronald Reagan Ronald Reagan was a former actor and former Governor of California when he was elected to the Presidency in
1980. He was the oldest President to be elected, being 69 when he was elected (CNN, 2004). That same day, only moments after he was sworn in as President, hostages
that had been held in Tehran were released, setting Reagan on something of a pedestal (Session VI Timeline, 2005). Shortly after he gave his inaugural speech, in March of 1981,
he was the victim of an assassination attempt. The man, Hinckley, made an attempt on his life to gain the attention of the actress Jodi Foster (Ronald Wilson Reagan, 2005).
Many believe that it was this assassination attempt that rocketed Reagan into a position where people were to love and support him no matter what he did. "Reagans popularity ratings
suddenly went through the roof, inflated by public sympathy. The nations news editors and publishers chose to play along, rather than risk appearing cold and heartless" (Ronald Wilson Reagan, 2005).
The same year the Air traffic controllers went on strike and Reagan essentially dismissed them, telling them they no longer had jobs (Session VI Timeline, 2005). In the following
year war broke out between the United Kingdom and Argentina. The fighting concerned the Falkland (Malvinas) Islands and Reagan ultimately sent troops to fight (Session VI Timeline, 2005). In the
