Security rule has been in place for some time; compliance was required for all entities that are covered by the rule since 2006. However, security is an ongoing issue, with
the need to ensure systems remain compliant. The aim of this presentation is to ensure that managers of entities which are covered by this rule understand the way in which
an organisation can ensure they remain compliant by considering the security requirements. Slide 2 Under The Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) there was a requirement for the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for the development of suitable regulations to protect
privacy and security of certain health information of patients, referred to as protected health information (PHI). These requirements are met under two rules, the privacy rule and the security rule.
The privacy rule gains the most attention, it is the rule under which the privacy of individual patient information is protected. However, for privacy to be safeguarded it needs to
be secure, so the security rule effectively operationalizes the privacy rule. The security rule applies to information that is ether held or transmitted in an electronic format. Slide
3 The security rule applies to organizations and individuals that are classified as covered entities. These are different types of organizations which will deal with healthcare or hold
healthcare information specific to individual patients. In addition to the main healthcare providers, such as hospitals where there are electronic patient records this include other entities. Individuals, such as doctors,
