leader, played by Lucille Ball on the TV sitcom I Love Lucy (Davidson and Lytle, 2004). While I Love Lucy was a comedy, it nevertheless touched on the tensions and
frustrations of American women who were encouraged to abandon the careers and jobs they fulfilled during World War II and return to the home as fulltime housekeepers and mothers.
As this suggests, how the media portrays women is rather like holding a mirror to the actual sociological shifts that are occurring in society at the time of a TV
shows popularity. In a similar manner, the sociological shifts that have transpired since the 1950s are mirrored in todays media. This is evident by comparing I Love Lucy to
a contemporary TV sitcom, such as Reba, starring Reba McEntire, which ran from 2001-2007. Lucy Ricardo was constantly trying to find a way to be part of her husband
Rickys act. Lucy, mother of one boy, was not satisfied with her role as wife and mother and wanted a career in show business. It was part of the shows
comedic formula that this was never going to happen. Nevertheless, Lucy and Ricky were happily married, more or less, and offered a stable, loving home to their son. This
compares sharply with life of Reba Hart, as there was never any question that this woman would be employed, as it was a necessity since Reba was a single mother,
