possibility that global warming is not an overriding environmental disaster in the making, but that possibility is a small one, and one that most climate scientists do not believe exists at all. It is far too easy to dismiss environmentalist activists as extremists, alarmists who see danger lurking around every technological corner. The truth is that environmentalists raise valid concerns. In the US, they have not been met with concerned response in part because they have fallen to the temptation of sensationalism in the past. Actor Ted Danson today heads the highly respected American Oceans Campaign, but decades ago he adamantly proclaimed that the ocean would be "dead" in seven years. Former Vice President Al Gore is referred to as "Mr. Environmentalism" by detractors and supporters alike (and even himself), but the zinc mining operation he leases his Tennessee family farm to routinely is fined by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation for its environmental abuses (Farah, 2000). And so the issue of global warming falls into a finger-pointing contest, with each side blaming the other for its faults. None of that finger-pointing has been able to restore the polar ice caps, however, which have begun falling apart in the manner of Humpty Dumpty falling off the wall.
