literary website for preschoolers offers an overview of the site and the ways that it facilitates reading readiness. The National Institute for Literacy indicates that the fundamental components for reading
readiness are familiarity with print and books, letter recognition and phonemic awareness ("Get Your Preschooler"). Browsing the first hits that came up in a Google search using the keywords
"preschool reading readiness" resulted in landing on "Preschool and Kindergarten Reading Readiness" posted by DLTKs Sites, who describe themselves as a typical North American family. Designed by parents, with lots
of input from their children, this site offers a wide variety of practical, easily-usable and effective ideas, strategies and worksheets that can be utilized with preschoolers, ages 2-5. The
site begins by offering general instructions for parents and teachers on the topic of age distinctions between preschoolers, pointing out that 2 year olds need adult assistance to complete the
worksheets, 3 years old require minimal assistance and 4 to 5 years old can complete work without assistance once directions are given. The introduction then explains that rhyming activities are
instrumental in developing phonemic awareness. This is followed by a variety of printable worksheets. The first set is "Comparison Worksheets: Spot the Differences," which features line drawings of common objects
with a minor detail missing from one picture within a line of identical images. Spotting the missing detail aids children in developing visual discrimination and visual memory skills ("Preschool"). Printable
worksheets on rhyming words are also offered. In these worksheets, a box sets off the first labeled picture with three labeled pictures to the right with the instruction that the
child should identify and color the pictures that rhyme. An ingenious feature of this website is that it offers a broad array of free printable beginning reader mini books.
