United States. But, if truth be understood, there are many forms of democracy and it seems that each nation takes into account its own particular needs when determining what form
of democracy it will take on. There are, however, some very basic elements to the notion fo democracy. With that in mind the following paper examines the prerequisites of democracy
and examines various forms of democracy in several nations. What is Democracy? Prior to discussing the ways in which varying nations utilize forms of democracy it is perhaps
important to understand some of the forms of democracy, or the prerequisites to considering something a democracy. One author notes that, "A democracy is a form of government under which
the power to alter the basic laws and forms of goverment lies with the voting citizenry, referred to as the people, and all decisions are made by representatives who act
by their consent, as enforced by elections and the rule of law" (Wikipedia, 2004). However, one can also note that there are some cases where democracy is also involved
with a form of monarchy. The monarchy has limited powers and it is often a form of government that is referred to as a republic rather than a democracy. However,
Great Britain is a nation that perhaps clearly fits within this sort of category relating to democracy. We further note that in contemporary society we often associate the term
democracy with liberal democracy. This is somewhat different from the original understanding of democracy as it was first conceived in ancient Greece. In ancient Greece we note that the word
