Considerations Risks to the Company It is amazingly expensive to send a manager and the managers family to another country to live for an extended period of time. The company must step up to help with life at home in terms of assisting to sell the house or oversee its maintenance while it is empty or rented; providing for health care in the foreign country; arranging for permits, utilities, transportation, school for the children and other points of daily life. After all of the preparation has been done and the company has provided extensive training for all family members, the expatriate at any time could decide (1) that the expatriate life is not beneficial for the family and wish to return early; or (2) the expatriate life is highly beneficial and the expatriate decides to leave the company to take employment in the foreign country. Other Expatriates Views The new expatriate and the expatriates family need to be prepared to be surprised by "culture shock." Regardless of how well prepared the expatriate and family members are for the move, each is more likely than not to experience culture shock in some degree (Mole, 1995). Culture shock is the reaction process that occurs when an individual immerses himself in another culture for an extended period of time, such as when an expatriate is on assignment overseas for several months at a time (Sabath, 1999).
